The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery attack on a member of the Council of State, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has announced.

Addressing a press briefing on Thursday, January 29, COP Donkor said the arrests formed part of what she described as “two major success stories” chalked up by the Police Service through intelligence-led operations.

“The police have arrested seven suspects in a highway robbery involving a Council of State member, which occurred sometime last year,” she disclosed.

The suspects have been identified as Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abana Baswi Fanga, Wilson Avasong, Muntaro Idrisu, also known as Virgin, Aminu Zebrilla, also known as Bedman, Inusa Sumaila, also known as Agenda, and Haruna Safiano.

According to the CID Director-General, the robbery occurred on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale–Buipe Highway, where the victim was attacked by six armed men who made away with several personal belongings.

Although the police did not officially name the victim, earlier reports indicated that the target was Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, the Chiana-Pio and Upper East Regional representative on the Council of State, who was ambushed near Mile 40 on the Buipe–Tamale Highway in the Savannah Region.

Items stolen during the attack included mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop and other personal effects.

COP Donkor explained that on January 11, 2026, following intelligence gathered by the CID, officers from the Anti-Robbery Unit were deployed to Salaga in the Savannah Region, leading to the arrest of Rashida Yussif. An iPhone 7 Plus, later confirmed to belong to one of the victims, was retrieved from her.

Subsequent investigations led police to a mobile phone shop at Dagomba Line in Salaga, where the shop attendant, Aaron Abana Baswi Fanga, was arrested. He informed investigators that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avasong, an environmental officer and owner of the shop who resides in Tamale.

Wilson Avasong was later arrested in Tamale and told police he had purchased the phone from a phone repairer, Muntaro Idrisu, for GH₵1,000. Muntaro Idrisu was subsequently arrested at the Aboabo Market in Tamale and led officers to Aminu Zebrilla, a 35-year-old motorbike rider, at Dungu, a suburb of Tamale.

Police said Aminu Zebrilla admitted selling the phone to Muntaro Idrisu for GH₵650. A search conducted in his room uncovered an array of weapons and items suspected to be connected to the robbery, including locally manufactured firearms, ammunition, knives, face masks, suspected Indian hemp, talismans, multiple mobile phones, wristwatches, pen drives and a motorbike.

Investigations further revealed that Aminu Zebrilla is an ex-convict who was jailed for robbery in 2012. Two additional suspects, Inusa Sumaila, also known as Agenda, aged 42, and Haruna Safiano, aged 32, were later arrested from a hideout behind the Tamale China Mall.

COP Donkor stressed that police operations are still ongoing, with efforts underway to arrest other suspects believed to be on the run and to recover a weapon yet to be retrieved.
