The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo, has cut the sod for the construction of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Gaani, a move expected to significantly improve access to primary healthcare in the area.
For many years, residents of Gaani have had to travel long distances to neighbouring communities or to the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo to access basic medical care.
This often meant spending hours on the road, sometimes in emergency situations, putting lives at risk and increasing the cost and burden of healthcare on families.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr. Aworigo said the new CHPS compound would help address the long-standing healthcare challenges faced by the community. He explained that the facility is a standard CHPS compound that will include a delivery suite, a dispensary and a store.
“It’s got a delivery suite, it’s got a dispensary, it’s got a store. So if it’s completed, it will actually help to make the work of our health workers easier. They work in a challenging environment. You can imagine working in this heat alone, and if somebody comes at night, where will you keep that person? You have to turn them away,” the MP stated.
He assured residents that he would continue to use his position in Parliament to advocate for improved healthcare infrastructure across the constituency.
“I’ll continue to make every effort that I can as a Member of Parliament to make sure that we meet the health needs of our people and also make the work of our health professionals easier so that they can be attracted to serve our communities,” he added.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Director of Health Services, Dr. Edmund Nyanwura, commended the MP for the initiative, describing the project as a major milestone in strengthening primary healthcare delivery in the municipality.
“This CHPS compound will bring healthcare closer to the people and reduce pressure on the War Memorial Hospital. It will also improve maternal and child health outcomes in this part of the municipality,” Dr. Nyanwura noted.
The Chief of Gaani, Akemyela Adoba, also welcomed the project, calling it a huge relief for the community. He expressed appreciation to the MP for spearheading the initiative and pledged the community’s support to ensure the successful completion and protection of the facility.
Residents at the ceremony expressed hope that the project would be completed on schedule, saying the CHPS compound would save lives and improve the overall well-being of people in Gaani and surrounding communities.
