Authorities have begun clearing the Tindonmolgo/Tindonsobligo dam after residents raised concerns that heavy siltation and debris were obstructing water flow.

The project, led by Hamza Ataribana, Bolgatanga Municipal DRIP Coordinator for the Upper East Region, forms part of a broader effort to rehabilitate three major dams across the region.

Providing a timeline for completion remains difficult, Mr. Ataribana said, citing the scale of the work.

“We only started today, and the workload is significant,” he said. “Once the dam is cleared, rainfall will refill it and allow water to flow properly, reducing the risk of flooding.”

The initiative is being undertaken under the direction of Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo, who has emphasized the need to respond to community concerns about water management, the DRIP coordinator said.

Residents say the dam had been clogged with debris for some time, affecting domestic water use, livestock watering, and irrigation.

“This is a major relief for our community,” said a resident who gave his name as Agana. “During heavy rains in the past, water overflowed into the wrong places and damaged our farms. We are happy to see action being taken.”

Officials say the work will proceed in phases, beginning with the Tindonmolgo/Tindonsobligo dam before extending to other sites in the Bolgatanga Municipality. The clearance involves the careful and labor-intensive removal of accumulated debris.

Mr. Ataribana stressed the need for sustained community cooperation to maintain the dam after rehabilitation.

The project highlights ongoing water management challenges in the Upper East Region, where aging infrastructure and siltation continue to affect livelihoods. Residents say they hope the intervention will improve water flow, prevent flooding and support farming and livestock activities in the area.
