Madam Monica Bakiva, the Upper East Regional Director of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), has called for increased female representation in leadership positions in the Upper East Region, urging women to step forward and compete boldly in politics and governance.

In a passionate appeal, she expressed hope that future appointments and reshuffles would prioritize more women in decision-making roles.

“It is my prayer that in the next reshuffle, more women will be considered so that promises made to women about representation will be fulfilled,” she stated.

Reflecting on recent Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) appointments, Madam Bakiva maintained that the women who applied were competent.

“Our women were capable. The competition was very tight,” she said.

She suggested that structured quotas for women could help improve representation across the region’s 15 districts.

“If five out of the 15 districts were reserved for women, it would ensure balanced leadership,” she proposed.

Madam Bakiva observed that financial constraints often discourage capable women from contesting leadership positions.

“Politics now requires resources. Some women feel they are not financially strong enough to compete,” she noted.

She also cited fear of male-dominated competition as another barrier.

“Some women see many men contesting and think they cannot compete. But sometimes being the only woman in a race can even work in your favor.”

Drawing from personal experience, she advised young women to develop resilience if they wish to pursue politics.

“Insults will come. Even former presidents were insulted. So who are we to expect otherwise?” she remarked.

Ms. Bakiva emphasized self-discipline, integrity and confidence as key qualities women must cultivate in the political space.

Ending with a message to women across the region, Madam Bakiva stressed the importance of economic empowerment.

“If you are a woman and you want to enjoy your marriage and your life, make your own money,” she said.

“When a woman is financially independent, she gains confidence and respect. Empower a woman, and you empower a family.”

She encouraged women to take advantage of empowerment programmes such as NEIP’s Ejumawura initiative when the application portal reopens.
