Inspector Leo Kwame Tagborlo, Lead Investigator at the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), has decried the increasing rate of reckless driving and interference with law enforcement in the Upper East Region.
Speaking at an interactive session with transport unions, Inspector Tagborlo expressed frustration with drivers who ignore road safety rules as well as politicians who interfere with law enforcement duties.
“At times you stand on the road and signal them, but they ignore it and continue. From there, some of them get involved in accidents,” Inspector Tagborlo said.
He lamented that politicians often intervene to plead on behalf of errant drivers, making it difficult for law enforcement officers to perform their duties effectively.
Inspector Tagborlo cited instances where drivers have threatened him and his colleagues for enforcing the law, and where politicians have called to influence the outcome of cases.
He also highlighted concerns about trucks that drop sand and chippings onto the road, noting that such actions damage other vehicles and pose risks to road users.
The MTTD investigator urged parents and opinion leaders to advise young drivers to desist from reckless driving and to respect law enforcement officers.
“It is better we advise our wards to desist from such practices,” he said. “Some of them will tell you straight away, ‘Do you know who I am? Do you know my father or my uncle?’”
