The Upper East Regional President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), Mark Atia Ismael, has raised concerns over the increasing number of persons with disabilities in the region, attributing the trend largely to road accidents.
According to him, a growing number of individuals who have joined the federation in recent years acquired their disabilities through road traffic accidents.
Speaking on Tinmaalgo Sanga on Bolga FM, Ismael urged road users, particularly young people, to exercise greater caution when driving or riding.
“We must be very cautious when we are on the roads. I have a number of people who joined the organization as a result of road accidents, increasing the numbers,” he said.
He emphasized the need for personal responsibility and defensive driving, advising motorists and riders to remain alert at all times.
“When you are on the road, see everyone as an unsafe driver except yourself. That is how you can pass through safely,” he said. “If you assume everyone is careful, you may stay within your limits, but someone else could crash into you. So, let’s always be cautious.”
Ismael warned that without increased awareness and responsible road use, the number of disability cases linked to accidents could continue to rise.
