ICOUR starts soil assessment in Tono to support tomato farmers

The Managing Director of the Irrigation Company of Upper Regions (ICOUR) is calling for direct input support for farmers interested in tomato production in the Upper East Region under the government’s Feed Ghana programme.

He said providing essential inputs would significantly boost production and encourage more farmers to venture into tomato farming.

“If government, through the Feed Ghana programme, can provide quality seeds, fertilisers, weedicides and all other chemicals to support soil treatment and production, this would go a long way to help,” he said.

Meanwhile, he noted that ICOUR has already taken steps to assess land suitability for tomato production under the Tono Irrigation Project.

“We have a team at Tono doing soil testing. They are sampling soil from various plots and testing, and we will see what their nutrient requirements would be and whether those soils are even good for the production of tomatoes. We know that the lands are generally good, but it is important to do this so that farmers are advised accordingly,” he said.

Mr. Anarigide was speaking following a ban imposed by the Burkina Faso government on the export of fresh tomatoes.
