The Vice President and Investment Director of Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited (CNML), Vincent Sun, has stated that the company’s flagship mining project in northern Ghana will play a pivotal role in strengthening cooperation between Ghana and China.

Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Shandong Gold Group, one of China’s largest gold mining firms, poured its first gold in November 2024 in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region. The mine, which is expected to produce five million ounces of gold over a 15-year lifespan through surface mining, is Ghana’s largest single gold stream mine.

Speaking during a visit by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to the mine site, Mr. Sun highlighted the strategic importance of the Cardinal Namdini project, describing it as a symbol of growing bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to Mr. Sun, the Namdini project represents one of the company’s most significant overseas investments and its first major venture in Ghana.

“We want this project to serve as an example of cooperation between Ghana and China and to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries,” he said.

He noted that the project is the largest mining operation in northern Ghana and carries significant economic and social importance for surrounding communities. Mr. Sun revealed that since the construction and early operational phases, the project has already made substantial contributions to the Ghanaian economy, injecting over 100 million US dollars and creating employment for more than 2,000 people.

“We have already benefited local communities and contributed significantly to the economy. Going forward, our goal is not just to operate as a business, but to enrich local people, support the country, and create enduring value for all stakeholders,” he stated.

The CNML Vice President and Investment Director emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to Ghana, noting that the mine is expected to operate for several decades, offering sustained opportunities for skills development and employment.

“We will be operating here for the next 20 to 30 years. We believe the local community and workforce will grow with us through training and education to become an important part of this project,” he said.

Mr. Sun further underscored the company’s intention to deepen local participation by attracting and developing talent from host communities, the Upper East Region, and across Ghana.

“We need more talented mining professionals and people interested in the industry to join us,” he added.

He described the Minister’s visit and engagements with company officials as a demonstration of government’s commitment to the project and the mining sector as a whole, adding that it also reinforces CNML’s responsibility to operate sustainably and inclusively.
