Water shortage disrupts healthcare at Bongo Soe Health Center

A severe water shortage at the Bongo Soe Health Center in the Bongo District is disrupting healthcare delivery, forcing staff and patients to take drastic measures to maintain essential services.

Health workers say the shortage has “significantly affected the provision of essential healthcare services,” particularly in maternity and labor wards. Handwashing and sterilization have been hampered, increasing the risk of healthcare-associated infections, especially among newborns.

Relatives of patients often carry gallons and buckets of water from external sources, while staff sometimes have to purchase water from tankers at high, unsustainable costs to maintain basic hygiene and emergency care. Newborns, patients, and caregivers frequently leave wards to fetch water, causing missed medical reviews and delayed treatments.

Residents have voiced frustration over what they describe as a lack of urgency from authorities, warning that the shortage poses “a serious risk to the health and safety of both patients and staff.”

Health workers and community members are now calling on local government and health authorities to restore a reliable water supply and prevent further disruptions to essential healthcare services in the district.
