A candid moment on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East has sparked fresh debate about truth, power, and political survival in Ghana after Professor David Millar openly declared that his commitment to honesty makes him “unfit” for politics.
Speaking during the Friday, April 3, 2026 edition of the programme, the President of Millar Open University and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies responded to a suggestion that he should consider entering politics.
His response was both striking and revealing.
“This is precisely why I’m not in politics,” Prof. Millar said. “I can go today, but I’ll be sacked tomorrow.”
Drawing on past experiences and observations, the academic suggested that Ghana’s political environment often leaves little room for blunt truth-telling.
“I’ve had invitations to join—even now. But I know myself. I’ll tell my boss, ‘Sir, you are telling lies,’” he said.
He referenced the experience of a colleague, Professor Avea, whom he worked with during the development of the Upper West Regional plan, noting that even seasoned professionals struggle to navigate the political space without compromise.
“You go to the press and tell people your political story. I’ll come and say, ‘Boss, this is not true. We haven’t procured this. We haven’t delivered that.’ That’s why I’ll be sacked tomorrow,” he added.
Prof. Millar said his decision to remain outside partisan politics is not driven by fear, but by a desire to preserve his integrity and avoid bringing embarrassment to those close to him.
“In order not to disgrace my friends and family, I just stay where I am,” he said.
However, he indicated that while invitations to enter politics persist, his position remains unchanged for now.
“I have a lot of things lined up on my table. If they insist, maybe I’ll go for one. But I tell you, Easter won’t finish,” he said.
