The Upper East Regional Women Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Georgina Ayamba, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deceiving Ghanaians with campaign promises ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Madam Ayamba, who announced her intention to contest the party’s First Vice Chairperson position in the region, expressed disappointment in what she described as the government’s failure to implement key policies it touted while in opposition.

“Most of the time, I sit and ask myself, as a country, where are we going?” she said. “My main issue with the NDC and His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is saying something in opposition and doing a different thing when they come into power.”

According to her, nearly two years into the administration, she is yet to see any major policy from the NDC’s manifesto being implemented.

“I am yet to see any of their major policies that they mentioned. Ghanaians gave them the mandate to serve, but I am yet to see one fulfilled,” she stated.

Madam Ayamba cited several areas where she believes the government has fallen short, including promises to cocoa farmers, the introduction of a 24-hour economy, and the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank.

On cocoa pricing, she claimed that farmers have not benefited from the assurances made during the campaign.

“Look at the promises they gave cocoa farmers. We are yet to see those promises fulfilled. Instead, the situation has worsened,” she said.

She also questioned the progress of the much-publicized 24-hour economy policy, which she said was central to the NDC’s campaign message.

“They promised a 24-hour economy to create jobs, but today, people are losing their jobs. I am yet to see any real implementation on the ground,” she added.

Madam Ayamba further recounted her interaction with market women who, she said, were hopeful about the establishment of the Women Development Bank but are now disappointed.

“These women believed they would get support through the Women’s Development Bank. They are now asking where the bank is. It is sad to see their expectations unmet,” she noted.

She also criticized the government over its handling of the anti-LGBTQ bill, alleging that the issue was used as a campaign tool but has since been sidelined.

“The NDC used the LGBTQ issue during the campaign, going to churches and religious bodies, promising to sign the bill. Today, they say it is not a priority,” she said.

“As a Christian, I am saddened. The energy they put into campaigning with that issue, I thought by now it would have been signed.”

Madam Ayamba argued that the perceived inconsistencies between campaign promises and governance risk sending the wrong message to the youth.

“What are we teaching the youth? That politics is about saying anything to win power and doing something else when you get there?” she questioned.

She maintained that Ghanaians are closely monitoring developments and will make their judgment in the next elections. Madam Ayamba expressed confidence that the NPP, led by its flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will present a stronger alternative in the 2028 elections.
