National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has urged party supporters complaining about job opportunities to remain loyal and not be swayed by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing supporters and executives during his two-day tour of the Upper East Region as part of his nationwide “Thank You Tour,” Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the NPP targets disgruntled NDC members and lures them with promises.
“Those who are complaining loudly, the NPP knows how to lure you into working against your own party,” he said. “If you are living in the same community, they will approach you and say, ‘Oh, so you were shafted and you really had an accident and all that. So your party did not give you anything at all. They have cheated you.’ They will say all those things.”
He warned that anger and disappointment could push members into making decisions they later regret.
“If you are not careful and you believe that, then what do you do? You leave and come to my party,” he said.
“If their party is good, wouldn’t they have been in power? But if you are angry, you fall for that temptation,” Mr. Asiedu Nketia told a gathering in the Bolgatanga East constituency.
The NDC chairman contrasted the two parties’ approach to members, arguing that the NDC treats all members equally regardless of when they join.
“When you join the NDC, we consider everyone equal. But in the NPP, when you join today, you go to the back of the line like the chicks of a duck. The smaller ones will be last, and you may never get to the front,” he said.
He cautioned that returning to the NDC after defecting would be difficult.
“At that time, it will be difficult for you to come back, because if you want to return, they will say you are a political prostitute. Today you are here, tomorrow you are there,” he said.
Using a proverb to make his point, he added: “When you are angry with your party, ask yourself: the food I cannot get in my mother’s kitchen, am I sure I will get it in my mother’s rival’s kitchen? If the answer is no, then stay where you are.”
Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s comments come amid complaints from some NDC supporters about access to job opportunities under the current administration.
His Upper East tour is part of a nationwide exercise to thank voters and account for the government’s stewardship following the party’s return to power.
He was accompanied by government officials, National Executives, constituency executives, and party supporters.
