The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has pledged to provide residential accommodation for police officers at Sumbrungu and Sherigu to enhance security in the rapidly growing communities.
The move forms part of efforts to make newly established police posts in the areas fully operational and effective in maintaining law and order.
Speaking during an inspection of the facilities, Mr. Adongo explained that although the Sumbrungu police post was initiated during the first term of John Dramani Mahama under the leadership of then Municipal Chief Executive, Ayiriba Ayagle, the facility faced challenges in becoming operational after completion.
“After the project was completed, we struggled to make it operational until recently, when they decided that they would operate it. At the time, the facility had suffered some level of disrepair, so I came in and repaired it for them to use it,” he stated.
Despite the progress, the MP noted that key infrastructure gaps remain, particularly the lack of accommodation for officers, which affects effective policing.
“We still know that there are a couple of facilities that are absent. There is a need to build some quarters here so that the officers who are posted here will have a place to stay and take care of our people,” he said.
Mr. Adongo emphasized that the absence of adequate logistics, including patrol vehicles, also limits the capacity of officers to respond promptly to security concerns.
“We need to get them a police vehicle because now Sumbrungu is very big, so that in the evening they can do enough patrols,” he added.
He revealed that a similar police facility he personally constructed in Sherigu is yet to be fully operational due to logistical constraints, expressing optimism that ongoing engagements with the Interior Ministry and the Inspector-General of Police will help address the situation.
“It is still the same situation because we have not been able to operationalize it. We are hoping that with our engagement with the current Minister for Interior and the IGP, we will be able to make resources available so that it can be fully operational,” he noted.
Among the projects he inspected are the commissioning of a KG and maternity blocks at Anateem community, commissioning of grinding mills at Azorebisi and Agusi, inspection of a culvert at Amogrebisi and a 3-unit classroom block at Agusi.
