Hajia Maria Fuseini, the Builsa North Municipal Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer (CNMO), has called on healthcare professionals in the Municipality to strictly uphold the core values of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Addressing a gathering of nurses and midwives at a durbar organized by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in Sandema, Hajia Fuseini emphasized that the service’s core values; discipline, integrity, innovation, people-centeredness, professionalism, teamwork, and excellence must serve as guiding principles in their daily duties.
Hajia Fuseini, popularly known as “Prof” among nurses and midwives in the Region, underscored the importance of maintaining professional standards.
She insisted that all staff must wear their prescribed uniforms while on duty, adding that, “Our services are people-centered. Everything we do must be geared toward the well-being of our patients and clients.
They are our priority.”
Highlighting the collaborative nature of healthcare, the CNMO warned against the dangers of working in isolation, particularly during medical emergencies.
“No nurse or midwife can do it alone. If you encounter an emergency, such as excessive bleeding on the labour ward, call for help immediately. Attempting to handle such cases alone is dangerous and can lead to complications. We must work in teams to achieve the desired clinical results,” she said.
Mr Cabral Vwawojei Bantiu, the Builsa North Municipal Director of Health Services, who re-echoed the same sentiments, described nurses and midwives as the “backbone” of the healthcare system.
He noted that the success of critical initiatives including the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), maternal and child health programmes, and the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) relied heavily on their commitment.
Mr Bantiu called for heightened professional accountability, insisting on punctuality and diligence. “Our attitude towards work must reflect the trust the public places in us,” he added.
The durbar, held under the theme “Strength in unity: Advancing nursing through unionism,” brought together national and regional executives of the GRNMA and members from various healthcare facilities across the Municipality.
Mr Ashiley Nii Ayitey, the Municipal Chairman of the Association, highlighted the importance of collective action, noting that while nurses and midwives often worked individually at patients bedside, they were a powerful force when united.
“Unionism gives us a collective voice, protection, and the power to influence positive change within our profession and the health system as a whole,” Mr Ayitey said.
