NPA projects possible fuel price reduction as global market conditions improve

The Upper East Regional Manager of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Bright Agbesi Ahiamadzor, says fuel prices in Ghana could decline in the coming months if favourable conditions on the international market are sustained.

Speaking on Bolga FM on June 22, 2026, Mr. Ahiamadzor attributed the outlook to improving global market conditions, including easing tensions in some international conflict zones and greater market stability.

He explained that the NPA’s mandate is to regulate, monitor, and oversee the downstream petroleum sector to ensure industry growth and protect the interests of consumers and stakeholders.

“Our role is to monitor, regulate, and oversee the pricing of petroleum products in the downstream sector to promote industry growth and stakeholder satisfaction,” he said.

Mr. Ahiamadzor noted that the Authority’s Price Planning and Research (PPR) unit continuously assesses factors that influence fuel prices, including international crude oil prices and foreign exchange rates.

According to him, fuel pricing in Ghana has been market-driven since the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector in July 2015.

“Before the establishment of the deregulated regime in July 2015, government controlled fuel pricing. However, the decision was taken to allow PSPs to price their products to encourage competition in the sector,” he explained.

He said sustained stability in global oil markets could translate into lower fuel prices for consumers, although prices remain subject to fluctuations in crude oil prices and exchange rate movements.

Mr. Ahiamadzor also pointed to Ghana’s efforts to refine its own crude oil as a positive development that could strengthen the country’s energy sector and improve long-term energy security.

The NPA, he added, will continue to monitor the petroleum market to ensure an adequate supply of fuel nationwide and protect consumers from unfair pricing practices.
