The Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive (DCE), Stephen Akurugu Aeke, has rejected the idea that age should determine who is appointed to leadership positions, arguing that competence, experience and the ability to deliver should matter more.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga programme, Mr. Akurugu Aeke said although he is among the older appointees in the current government, his age should not be considered a barrier to serving in higher leadership positions.
“Leadership is not about age. It is about experience, a good mindset and a hardworking spirit to drive development wherever the opportunity is given to you,” he said.
The DCE pointed to younger people occupying ministerial and other senior government positions, arguing that their ages do not prevent them from effectively performing their responsibilities.
He cited the Ashanti Regional Minister as an example, saying he is older than the minister but that the age difference does not determine their respective capacities to lead.
Mr. Akurugu Aeke argued that making age a major criterion for leadership appointments would mean potentially excluding experienced people simply because they are older than others already serving in government.
He maintained that experience, commitment, competence and the capacity to deliver development should instead guide decisions about who is entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
