A Senior lecturer at the University for Development studies, Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo has said a wholesale implementation of the Free Senior High School education policy by the government is a misdirection of resources.

According to him, most students especially those in the Southern parts of Ghana have parents who are capable of paying the fees of their wards and will not need free education from the government.

“Many of those who are in Southern Ghana that you are giving free education don’t really need it. They pay thousands of dollars for their wards to access cretch, Nursery, Primary and Junior High School so paying a fraction of that will just be a drop in the ocean.”

Dr. Ayamga was speaking to the host of A1 Radio’s flagship program, Daybreak Upper East on Monday.

He indicated that instead of implementing the policy on a wholesale basis, the government should rather direct the resources into improving the quality of education in the various deprived schools.

He noted that improving the quality of education in the most deprived areas by providing quality teachers, improving infrastructure and the providing the needed facilities will put all schools in Ghana on a level footing.

He added that until these have been done, the free SHS system will just be a policy to continue to make the rich richer and subject the poor to a life of servitude.
