The President of Ghana will join the family of the late Hugh Masekela to find a final resting place for the legendary musician whose contribution to African music is unparalleled.

A statement from the Presidesidency said, “On 30th January, 2018, President Akufo-Addo will be in South Africa to attend the funeral of his great friend, the South African trumpeter, composer and singer, Hugh Ramapolo Masekela, which is taking place in Johannesburg”.

The President upon hearing the news of the death of his “good friend” in a post on Facebook said “Freedom fighter, great artist, great musician, wonderful trumpeter, great friend, many thanks for the extraordinary music, marvelous memories, and exceptional friendship – you will be sorely missed by all of us in Accra. Rebecca, Bumpty, Irene, Sarbah, my good self and all your other friends. Rest in perfect peace Hugh Masakela, Hugh, Bra Hugh. God bless”.

Hugh Masekela was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer and singer. He has been described as “the father of South African jazz.” Masekela was known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as “Soweto Blues” and “Bring Him Back Home”. He also had a number 1 US pop hit in 1968 with his version of “Grazing in the Grass”.
