The Upper East Regional Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sanusi Issah says, the ongoing voters’ registration exercise in the region is going on smoothly despite some challenges.
Mr. Sanusi who has been monitoring the exercise observed that, some electoral commission officials were faced with, lack of suitable shades to capture applicants’ pictures and inadequate standby batteries.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Mr. Sanusi said, the registration process has been seamless, adding that, residents in some cases have helped EC officials to resolve some of their challenges.
“The few challenges that some of them face has to do with shades to capture pictures and some complain about the batteries of the machine when is about to go down what do they do?.
And fortunately for some of them, the EC officials have been given churches and Mosques to complement their work, so, with all honesty I have not witness a situation where the EC officials have a major challenge we need to talk about”.
Mr. Sanusi further accused the NDC of ‘planting’ their own among the EC registration officials with the aim of discrediting the smooth voters’ registration exercise with unfounded allegations .
“There is a deliberate attempt by our opponent (NDC) to make the process look not credible even if there are no problems to complain, they are quick to say that, the machine is having a problem in one way or the other.
I have gone round and I’m now beginning to suspect where the problem is going from, when the NDC is quick to make unsubstantiated allegations. I have seen a number of NDC people that are election officials and the question is, why partisan NDC persons are made EC officials. They have planted their people among the EC officials and they give wrong information just to create the impression that, the EC is not doing well”.
Mr. Sanusi also described as unfortunate the partisan campaigns by some political parties at registration centres.
“This is not voting, is registration and someone might register today and you wouldn’t know what will happen tomorrow. It is not a guarantee that, if you bring someone to register, the person will vote for your political party.
There is no need campaigning around registration centres, what you can do is to mobilize the grassroots, your supporters to come out and register”.
