Acting Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Michael Kpessa-Whyte, says measures introduced at the service have prevented 75,000 ghost names from entering the service payroll in the 2014/2015 service year.
This translates into a saving of GH¢26.5 million.
The new NSS management achieved this by ensuring that allowances of service personnel was processed only after personnel and his/her superior officer completed a monthly report form.
Traditionally, names on the National Service payroll go up every year. But, the 2013/2014 figure of 184,965 dropped to 89,612 in the current service year.
Dr Kpessa-Whyte says although the NSS is neck deep in corruption, the new management put in place by President John Mahama is committed to weeding out rot at the service.
Massive financial malfeasance hit the NSS last year, leading to the arrest of the then Executive Director, Alhaji Alhassan Mohammed Imoro, and a host of other officers.
The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) uncovered the deals.
Alhaji Imoro was interdicted and has been charged before court.
Dr Kpessa-Whyte was reassigned to temporarily head the NSS in October 2014.
