The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Kassena Nankana West District, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, has admonished students to stay away from negative influences and social vices, stressing that the future of Ghana lies in their hands.

He gave the advice during the district’s celebration of Ghana Independence Day, held at the Paga Town Park.

Addressing students, teachers, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders, Mr. Akurugo encouraged pupils and students to take their education seriously and remain disciplined in their conduct.

“You represent the future of this great nation. The destiny of Ghana lies in your hands. I encourage you to take your studies seriously, respect your teachers and parents, and remain disciplined in all that you do,” he said.

He further warned young people against engaging in activities that could derail their ambitions, urging them instead to focus on developing their talents and building strong character.

“You must also stay away from negative influences and social vices that can destroy your future. Instead, focus on building your talents and contributing positively to society,” he added.

Mr. Akurugo said the annual independence celebration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the country’s founding fathers, including Kwame Nkrumah, whose efforts secured Ghana’s freedom from colonial rule.

According to him, the day provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s history and renew their commitment to national development.

He noted that this year’s theme, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” calls on all Ghanaians to work together to strengthen the economy, improve livelihoods and restore confidence in the country’s future.

The DCE also reaffirmed the district assembly’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote development, improve education and create opportunities for young people in the district.

He commended teachers for their dedication to nurturing the minds and character of students, describing their efforts as crucial to the country’s development.

Meanwhile, the District Director of Education, Mary‑Magdalene Wompakeah, emphasized the importance of education in building prosperity and restoring hope in society.

She described classrooms as the foundation for the district’s development, explaining that education remains the most powerful tool for transforming lives and communities.

The celebration brought together traditional authorities, political heads, security agencies, teachers, students and residents to commemorate the historic day.
