Bongo District Hospital needs more beds, equipment as patient numbers rise – Director

The Bongo District Hospital is frequently operating at full capacity due to high patient attendance, prompting the District Health Directorate to appeal for additional beds, medical equipment and other essential resources.

Bongo District Health Director Estella Abazesi said the number of people seeking healthcare at the facility has placed considerable pressure on its limited resources and infrastructure.

Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga programme, Madam Abazesi said additional hospital beds and maternity beds are among the immediate needs of the facility.

She also appealed for essential medical equipment to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide healthcare to the growing number of patients seeking treatment.

Water supply, she said, remains another critical need across health facilities in the district, particularly because of its importance to sanitation and healthcare delivery.

Madam Abazesi appealed to individuals, businesses, NGOs, development partners and leaders from the Bongo District to support efforts to address some of the shortages confronting health facilities.

She also encouraged residents and individuals with connections to organisations and potential donors to help mobilise resources for the district’s health sector.

The appeal comes as the Directorate continues to contend with broader infrastructure and staffing challenges. Madam Abazesi has said the current district hospital was originally constructed as a health centre and, despite being upgraded administratively, does not have all the infrastructure, equipment and human resources expected of a purpose-built district hospital.

She has also disclosed that only 26 of the district’s 58 Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) zones currently have physical structures.

Madam Abazesi said addressing the shortages would require support from government, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, businesses, development partners and residents to improve healthcare delivery across the district.
