We’ve lost our job to digital phones-Photographers cry for help

Photography they say is an art of keeping memories and also a way of providing economic livelihood to many engaged in it as a business.

But in the advent of digital phones and their fast-developing features with high pixelated cameras, photographers in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region are worried about the toll the preference for phone cameras are having on their businesses.

Some of these Photographers who spoke to A1 News hold the view that many people now prefer to use their phone cameras to take pictures to digital cameras.

Aduko Thomas aka ‘One Shot’ a photographer said, ” I used to snap 80 people a day, but if not wedding or other occasions, I can not even get up to 20 people to take pictures for them. And, it is all about these ‘wahala’ smartphones with their usual cameras.”

Another Photographer, Anime Atinga also lamented that ” I’m planning on venturing into other business because with the way these smartphone companies are going, another ten years to come, our work will be outdated. If not photo editing that still keeps in business by now, you would not have found me here.”

When A1 News engaged some youth in random interviews on the trend , they explained that employing the services of a photographer was expensive as compared to the use of a phone’s camera.

If we don’t fight galamsey, we will all die -NDC MP laments

0

Protecting the environment should be a collective concern to every citizen in Ghana in order to ensure that the natural vegetation is preserved.

Failure to do so by both citizens and governments will lead the country’s natural resources to destruction. And if this phenomenon of destroying the environment or farmlands does not end , it will not only cause the extinction of some animals and plants species but will have a heavy toll on human lives.

This is the assertion by Member of Parliament for Builsa South in the Upper East Region , Dr Clement Apaak. The education came at the backdrop of reported cases of serious illegal mining in the country despite the public ban on the menace by President Nana Akufo Addo.

Interestingly, Excavators and gold seized by an inter ministerial task force against illegal mining dubbed ‘Operation Vanguard’ which is a composition of a joint security operation are reportedly missing.

The development has raised public eyebrows with many questions being asked about the commitment on the part of government to ending the apparently growing environmental threat.

To make speculations murkier, bigwigs affiliated to government have been mentioned and worst of it is the involvement of officials in the Taskforce against illegal mining.

So far ,the police have made some arrests with efforts underway in retrieving the ‘stolen’ excavators.

But speaking on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio , Dr Clement Apaak who is an Anthropologist by training lamented about the lukewarm approach taken by government in fighting illegal mining.

According to him , the President has shown little interest in fighting the crimes against the environment.

“The environment, perhaps the most important if you like foundation based on which we as human beings and other living organisms have to strive be it farming ,water resources, animals husbandry there is nothing we can do up the sky or in abeyance without the environment playing it’s role and that is why protecting the environment essentially means that we are protecting our own livelihood,we are protecting the extinction of our species”

“So when you have a situation where water bodies are being polluted as a result of illegal small scale mining or even for that matter , mining itself with various harmful chemicals like mercury and acidic we have every reason to worry.
To compliment that in terms of the destructive nature of our species and human beings largely as a result of atmosphere outmost selfishness is the destruction of the tree cover and that is where the issue of the fight against illegal harvesting and export of rosewoods also comes in and I will say that I’m very dissatisfied with the current state of the advocacy and fight to protect the environment on both accounts “ He lamented

The Builsa South MP has also accused the Nana Addo’s led-administration of being complacent in illegal mining and the evidence is clear in recent revealing reports that some government officials were involved in the illegal activity.

“It is very clear that there is official complicity in fighting galamsey” he indicated

Rejection is not a negative thing – International life, relationship coach

0

Founder of HeartWing Ministries, best-selling author and award-winning show host, Michelle McKinney Hammond said facing rejection while pursuing a relationship is not negative.

Founder of HeartWing Ministries and best-selling author Michelle McKinney Hammond has said that rejection is not a negative thing when seeking life partners.

Michelle agreed that everyone feared rejection but, it was is better to have a balanced approach to getting into relationships.

“I don’t think we should actually look at rejection in the negative, I think we tend to do that. If someone is not interested in me romantically, I’d rather know that upfront rather than invest my emotion, heart and maybe body into the situation for a deeper rejection in future,” she explained.

She advised that friendships should be nurtured since relationships are developed over time.

“Someone may like you as a friend today but three months from now say ‘I like this person more than that.’ You have to give time for the friendship to develop to see where it is going,” she told Kojo Yankson Friday, on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.

She was commenting on the topic, “Grabbing your target by Valentine’s day,” a relationship segment of the show.

McKinney further added that the attitude which is displayed may inform the decision of a person who may be interested in a relationship to decide whether to pursue it further or not.

“If they do seem to be interested, then just being open, friendly and available is what gives the other person permission to approach you,” the author said.

However, she warned against being needy and stalking the person who may show signs of being attracted to you as it may throw them off.
Also on the same show, Counseling Psychologist, Dr Emmanuel Hopeson, discussed how to focus on “self-packaging”, which involves how people walk, talk and carry themselves about, affect their chances of getting partners.

He explained that the tips and tricks that are generally shared to help enter relationships may not work for every individual.

Dr Hopeson stated that each person must discover whichever approach is most suitable for them, rather than working with those that are supposedly “cut in stone”.

“The packaging and putting oneself out there must be done by the individual themselves. The person really needs to know themselves and what really works for them. It can’t be generic,” he said

UER Airstrip:”Reckless” Rockson is the cause of project delay-NDC Communicator

0

The confusion surrounding the location of an Airstrip in the Upper East Region has been attributed to the actions of former Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari.

He has been accused of changing the proposed airstrip site from Sumbrungu to Sherigu in the Bolgatanga Municipality which nearly caused acrimony between the residents.

Then Minister for Aviation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, asked the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in 2018 to conduct feasibility studies on a new site at Sherigu for the construction of an airport. Already, former President John Dramani Mahama had announced at a durbar held during his working visit to the region in 2013 that construction work would begin on the same project at Anateem, an area within Sumbrungu, in 2014.

The Anateem site has been on the drawing board since the early 1970s where a proposed area has been cleared with a three kilometer runway constructed. So the change of the site came as a surprise to many people in the region, the then Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari was reported to have masterminded the changes.

But as the issue appears to have faded off, recent comments by Hon. Kofi Adda, Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central and Minister for Aviation in an interview on A1 Radio suggested that the airstrip was to be constructed in Navrongo because of the misunderstanding between Sherigu and Sumbrungu over the site selection.

However, the two communities have flatly denied the claims by the Minister that they were at ‘war’ and appeal to government to consider fast tracking the processes in getting the region an airstrip.

But commenting on the issue on Daybreak Upper East, Member of NDC’s Communications Team, John Paul Danka said, Rockson Bukari should be blamed for the delay of the project.

“we wouldn’t have been we are if the unnecessary internal bickering had not started at all .this attitude and penchant for geographical naming of national projects does not send us anywhere, the most important thing was that the airport was supposed to be here period ! we are where we are because of the recklessness and irresponsibility of Rockson Bukari ,the former Upper East Regional Minister. What was the essence of you changing the original site from Sumbrungu to Sherigu? He queried

He added that in order for the situation to be settled amicably, the Technical Report on the viability of the Anateem proposed site should be implemented.

Meanwhile, Communications Team Member of the NPP, Osman Kariyama made a point that issues of development should not be politicized but rather cool heads should be allowed to roll.

Today in History: Hearts of Oak draws 2-2 with Pele-led Santos FC

0

On 6 February, 1969 (Exactly 51 years ago today) Accra Hearts of Oak were held to a 2-2 drawn game by a Pele-led Santos FC of Brazil in an international friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Striker Abeka Ankrah opened the scoring midway in the game but Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pele’ struck to pull the visitors level before the break.

Not in the mood to be outdone, Ghana’s own “Pele” Amusa Gbadamoshie, restored Hearts’ lead in the second half, but midfielder Edu earned the great Brazilian side a deserving draw.

Despite the draw, Hearts still wrote their names in the history books by holding the giants from Brazil to a drawn game.

Santos FC had gone on a tour of Africa in 1969, led by the player, who would become the greatest ever to play the beautiful game, Pele. The Brazilian giants played 9 games on the continent. They won five, drew three and lost just one, and scored and conceded 19 and 11 goals respectively.

Read this Match Report by the Daily Graphic on Feb 7, 1969

Not much was seen of the legendary Pele in the match-heralded club international match between the fabulous Santos Club of Brazil and Ghana’s Premier Club, Accra Hearts of Oak at Accra Stadium yesterday.

And when the shrill whistle of referee major George Lamptey sounded, ending the game in a 2-2 tie, fans began to ask themselves whether the match deserves all the money spent on it, not to mention the fantastic high gate fees charged.

To say Pele is not a good player will be an underestimation. For the few occasions that he struck, fans saw in him a demon of a player.

His shooting and heading were a menace enough. And on no occasion did he give a wrong pass. But the man of the match was left winger Edu, whose superlative dribbling rendered the Hearts defence ragged.

On the whole, it was a match between skill and determination. The visitors showed plenty of skill showing superiority in every move they made.

But Hearts compensated their lack of finesse with hard unorthodox soccer, always carrying the game to their opponents. They succeeded in taking the lead on eeach occasion but for one or two unfortunate decisions by the referee, Hearts would have contrary to expectation, won the day.

Hearts were 1-0 up in the 27th minute when Abeka Ankrah found the net with a brilliant shot which could have made even the great Pele envious.

This goal was a morale booster for Hearts and two minutes later, opportunist goal soccer George Alhassan just missed the post by inches.

The visitors, playing as if there was nothing at stake stuck to their short pass-system. Suddenly, Pele struck and in a matter of moments, the entire Hearts defence was mesmerized. A typical Pele pass went straight to right winger Maria but his goal-bound cracking shot was brilliantly saved by Joe Adjei. This really looked like an obvious goal.

Five minutes later, Pele received a back pass and with a close range left-footer, pulled even for his side. There was some element of doubt about the goal, for linesman Hulede has been signaling that left winger Edu was completely offside.

The score stood 1-1 at half time.
Santos were in control of the game after the recess but as they repeatedly failed to find the net through over elaboration in the vital goal area Hearts soon took the initiative.

In the 55th minute, Ghana’s Pele, Amusa found the net when the he had the better part of his struggle with the goalie. Amusa was injured in this process and he remained on the touch line for five minutes.

The visitors protested against the goal but later on gave in.

Substitute player Douglas pulled even the in the 67th minute with an unseen shot.

Play was balanced from this moment, bit it was Hearts who had two narrow misses. George Alhassan actually put the ball in the net in the 67th minute but linesman Hulede who was fast becoming flag happy, ruled it offside.

Amusa missed a last minute goal which would have definitely won the day for Hearts in a match which failedd to satisfy fans, mainly because the fabulous soccer gem Pele, did not give of his best.

President Akufo Addo is a ‘galamsey promoter’- Hon Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister under the John Mahama’s administration, Inusah Fuseini has taken government on for failing to fight illegal mining known popularly as “galamsey”.

According to him , President Nana Akufo Addo and his government have not shown convincing commitment in fighting illegal mining which has destroyed many water bodies and farmlands in the country.

The Former Minister added that , his administration saw a more pragmatic and evident based approached in fighting galamsey as compared to what is being witnessed in the system now.

Mr.Fuseini who was speaking on Daybreak Upper on recent revelations about some missing excavators seized from galamsey activities which have been reportedly sold to NPP members to go into illegal mining said , the manifestations expose the realty on the grounds.

What has happened within the NPP is simply this , because they have made the system political ,political actors have taken advantage so they can not go against some of the persons who are doing the illegal mining because of their political coloration .If you know the names been mentioned that is why galamsey could not succeed. It was just an attempt to change the actors because the NPP believes that those they came to meet in the field because they picked their licenses during the time NDC, they are NDC . I said it so many times… today galamsey has been seen because of what has happened” he stated

Commenting on the missing tricycles at the Northern Development Authority (NDA), the Tamale Central MP said he was not surprised about the incident because the action shows the symptomatic “property grabbing” agenda of the NPP.

Stop Pwalungu Dam,the cost has been inflated !-Minority raises alarm

0

The Construction of the Pwalungu Multipurpose Dam in the Upper East Region may hit the rocks if the Minority in Parliament is able to realize it’s demand for the halting of the project because of an alleged opaque nature of the procurement process.

Minority in Parliament has called on the government to suspend the construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose dam and disclose the process of procurement.

President Nana Akufo Addo In November 2019 cut sod for the construction of the Pwalungu Multipurpose Dam in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region which aims at boosting agriculture and supplying electricity to augment the national grid . The cost of the project was pegged at $993 million to be funded by the government of Ghana through Sinohydro a construction subsidiary company of China-Power.

The loan agreement has since been tabled in parliament for deliberations. But at a press conference held in Accra on Tuesday, February 5 2020, the minority described the cost of the project as “inflated and padded cost.”

The minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu said: “We are demanding that if this government believes in transparency, and value for money, they [should] make us know how the procurement process was undertaken. We are not against the people [beneficiary communities]. We are concerned about the cost of the irrigation and power facility.”

“[The current price is] three times [that of] Bui, three times best practices, three times the established figures globally, and it can only be four times padded with fraud, and we state as a Minority that we will not accept this,” he added.

Continuing, Mr Iddrisu noted that “no one should expect” that the minority will “be part of any process to give approval to this because it is a complete rip-off.”
