23,559 Farmers in the U E R to benefit from ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’

The Minister of State in charge of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Nurah Syiele has disclosed that 23, 559 registered farmers in the Upper East Region will benefit from the Planting for Food and Jobs policy.

He made this disclosure on Monday June 6, 2017 at the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) conference hall in Bolgatanga.

The Minister of State also mentioned that government’s 50% fertilizer subsidy policy is a help to encourage farmers because in the actual sense, fertilizer should have sold at GHC 150.00 (One hundred and fifty Ghana Cedis per 50kg bag). He assured all the 13 Districts Directors of Agriculture in the region, the readiness of government to supply them with the subsidies fertilizers.

On his part, the Upper East Regional Minister who engaged Directors of Agriculture in the 13 district of the Upper East region stressed that the planting for Food and Jobs, is anchored on the pillars that will transform Ghanaian agriculture.

“The planting for Food and Jobs programme is expected to increase the production of Maize by 30 percent, rice by 49 percent, and soya bean by 25 percent, and sorghum by 28 percent from current production levels.”

The regional minister was very confident that the programme will create 750,000 jobs in both direct and indirect employment, adding that directors must take the issues of smugglers very serious.

However, the engagement afforded the District Agric Directors to share their challenges in their various districts.
