Cassius Mining Promise to Protect the Environment

A new mining firm, Cassius mining limited based at Gbane in the Talensi district of the Upper East region has pledged to protect the environment while living up to the expectation of the country’s mining regulations.

Ghana is currently battling with the activities of illegal gold mining popularly known as galamsey which has not only polluted river bodies but also destroyed vast of farmlands and trees in most communities. Their activities led to the call for the end of small scale gold mining in the country.

But the Australian mining firm, Cassius Mining limited has pledged to operate based on local and international mining standards while ensuring the safety of its workers is guaranteed. Cassius Mining limited has partnered locals to conduct drilling services in exploration of gold ore in large scale mining of about 13 square kilometers concession in the Talensi district.

Project Manager of Cassius Mining limited, Andrew Head in an interview said the company’s staff strength which is made up of 90 percent Ghanaians aims at creating jobs for the indigenes while boosting the Ghanaian economy.

He said this when the company organized a clean-up exercise to protect the environment at the company’s operation sites.

“We thank the district assembly for giving us such a wonderful support. We started our community sensitization process at the district assembly with wonderful support from everyone including the assemblymen. It is very important to us that we are cautious, very caring about the local environment and why you can look around here there is no rubbish, we try not to take down many trees, [we] leave as many as more we can feeding the small ecological system”

Although the company is currently prospecting for gold, senior geologist with the company, Peter Bassana is confident that the company will soon mine economic gold in the Talensi district.

“We treat every information we get here as classified information, we don’t release it to the public like that but there are signs that the future can be good for us.”

Talensi District coordinating director, Aljahi Mohammed Issahaku commended the company for instituting measures to ensure the environment is safe for current and future generations. Speaking on the company’s employment rate, Alhaji Issahaku is optimistic the company’s operations in the district will go a long way to reduce social vices due to unemployment.

The cleanup exercise that was partnered with Zoomlion, a leading waste management organization in the country and the locals also featured health and sanitation talks on how the community members can practice personal hygiene and protection of the environment.
