The Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, has revealed that arrangements have been made with a contractor to commence rehabilitation works on the poor state of street lights and traffic lights in the Bolgatanga municipality.

According to Mr. Bukari, all is set for the commencement of work and the contractor will soon move to site.

Even though the Minister did not disclose precisely when work will commence, he was optimistic that the issue of darkness on the streets of Bolgatanga will soon be a matter of the past.

He added that the traffic light system in the regional capital which has been defunct for several months will also be put back in perfect shape.

The Minister made the revelations in response to a question from A1 Radio’s Samuel Mbura at a media engagement with journalists in the upper east region held at the regional coordinating council Friday.

Mr. Bukari also challenged the media to be the voice of the voiceless in the region by acting as the anchors of justice or social levelers and bring issues of the poor and marginalized in society to bear for prompt action by responsible agencies. He urged media houses to desist from “picking and choosing” and present objective analysis of issues as they exist.

“i do challenge the media to be the voice of the voiceless in this region by acting as anchors of justice or social levelers. There are many poor and marginalized individuals who need their cases heard so as to prompt the responsible agencies to act.

“In the exercise of the basic tenets of journalism therefore, we should not seek to pick and choose but present objective analysis of the issues in the region” He said.

He appealed to the Information Minister for close collaborations with the leadership of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) to develop the capacity of media practitioners and manager in the upper east region.

“Honourable Minister, one thing we should work with the media to address in this part of the country is the capacity of media practitioners and managers” He continued.

A1 Radio launched a campaign to get damaged street lights and the defunct traffic lights within the municipality fixed earlier this year. It was themed “GetBolgaLitNow”
