Former Black Stars Captain ,Stephen Appiah is casting doubts about the success of the next generation of footballers in Ghana.
He argues that despite the tremendous contributions the sports sector has contributed to the economic growth of the country ,less attention and resources have been committed into it.
Stephen Appiah advancing his arguments cited the remittances Ghana derives from football players in Europe and other parts of the country, adding that their contributions overshadow natural resources .
“We talk about resources but if we concentrate on football the money that football players bring to this country ,not even gold …let’s say you have about thousand players ,you have Asamoah Gyan who brings 12million cedis to the country …you have other players also bring four or five million cedis ..so we have to start thinking if grooming these boys ” He observed
Stephen Appiah who has been the Brands Ambassador of Nestle Milo for the past years revealed this in an exclusive interview with A1 Sports in Bolgatanga in the upper east region during the opening ceremony of Nestle Milo U-13 soccer tournament. He also expressed fear for the future generation of football talents and called on government and other organisations to commit resources in the sports sector.
“I’m even scared in the next five years who would be the next generation in football”. This, the soccer maestro laments is crippling and demotivating talents in Ghana especially deprived areas like the northern part of the country” he lamented
Meanwhile, Brands Manager of Nestle Milo Ghana , Merilyn Ofori told A1 Sports her outfit has solely committed over one million Ghana cedis in the organization of the annual football Tournament with the objective of exposing young football talents to greater opportunities in their sports career.
She made mention of the likes of Sule Ali Muntari ,Michael Essien and a host of other successful players who are beneficiaries of this initiative .
The Nestlé Ghana Milo U13 champions League has 12 schools drawn from the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions.
At the end of the zonal level competitions ,three qualified teams from each region would represent at the next stage of the competition at the national level.
