The Zebilla hospital in the Bawku West district of Upper East Region operates without a mortuary. The hospital as well serves neighboring districts and parts of Burkina Faso.

The situation according to the Assistant District Director of Health Services, Patrick Apania, poses health hazards as families of dead bodies are often requested to transport their dead relatives to the regional hospital in Bolgatanga or the War Memorial hospital in Navrongo for preservation.

“Here, when a person dies, if they [families] want to keep it for long, we advised them [family of deceased] to send the corpse to Bolga or Navrongo for preserving” he said.

He defended his outfit stating authorities of the hospital cannot be blamed in instances where families cannot bear cost of transporting a dead relative to a nearby hospital for preservation saying “there is nothing the hospital can do, if not only supporting the family through embalmment of the body”

Mr. Apania tells A1 News the hospital has a building to serve as a morgue but the facility sits idle due to lack of a refrigerator and other necessary equipments to keep it running.

“The fridge and the other things are not in yet but we are told they are on the way coming” he stated.
