Former Member of Parliament of the Zebilla Constituency in the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region, Cletus Apul Avoka has expressed regret over the continuous deterioration of the Bolgatanga-Bawku road.

The road has been in that deplorable state for years, and Cletus Avoka, (mentioned as the longest serving Member of Parliament from the Constituency), had been blamed in the past together with other MPs whose Constituents use the road, for not talking about the state of the road in Parliament and doing very little to get the road worked on.

But in his recent interview, Mr. Avoka, (now out of Parliament) recounted his efforts and that of other MPs from the region to get the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Plumako International Road constructed.

According to him, measures to fix the road have been thwarted by the New Patriotic Party government. He indicated that, he together with the then Upper East Regional Caucus in Parliament ensured that, the road received attention before NDC was booted out of office in 2016, adding that, despite these efforts, the Akufo-Addo led administration has failed to put measures in place to have the road completed.

The Brazilian Contractor working on the road, Quiero Galvao has since not been working for lack of funds to complete the stretch of road awarded to them.

Actors in government on several occasions have assured citizens in the region that, the Contractor would return to site, but this has not materialized.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio morning Programme, “Daybreak Upper East”, Mr. Avoka said, the current government must be held accountable to execute the project.

“You see, a huge capital investment like road construction, cannot be placed on the shoulder of a Member of Parliament and this is not a forum for me to tell you what we have done. But it will surprise you know that, the effort that we, the Members of Parliament, not just from Bawku area, not just from myself, but even the entire Upper East Region, to talk former President Mahama and that yielded the result that the contract was awarded to the a Brazilian Contractor in 2015, to work on the road and they have done it half way.

If John Mahama had returned to power in 2016, this road would have been completed by now. So we don’t talk about the past, let’s talk about the government in power.” he said

The Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmako road serves seven Districts in the Upper East Region and expected to serve as an international road too.

It is important to the economic boast of the Upper East Region and has been estimated that, once the road is properly worked on the current traveling time could be reduced by half as well as the stress level.
