Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East Constituency, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has described the proposed Parliamentary chamber to be built for the Legislature as a complete failure of democracy and due process by the government.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Dominic Ayine said, many of his colleague MPs are surprised to hear such a proposal by the government and as a sitting Member of Parliament, he is still learning about the whole issue from the media.

“We as Members of Parliament did not know that an architect has been appointed and commissioned to start drawings for the construction of the new chamber.” He said.

He added that as people’s representatives, they (MPs) have not asked for a new chamber, hence see it as a failure of democracy and due process.

“It is not the duty of Parliament to increase the number of seats, that is the duty of Electoral Commission; that duty is spelt out in the constitution of Ghana, but you see, Parliament has just taken that duty upon itself.” He added.

The MP for Bolgatanga East Constituency, however said, despite the ongoing arguments regarding the proposed chamber, there are challenges in the Parliament House that also need to be looked at. He mentioned the complete mixture of majority and minority MPs in the house and difficulties associated with free movement in between the rows as examples of issues to be looked at.

Meanwhile, some constituents in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency have vehemently kicked against the proposal by the leadership of Parliament for a new chamber for the legislature.

The new edifice according to reports if constructed, is expected to house diplomatic offices, a library, a church, museum, eateries, press room, galleries, a car park, an upper gallery garden, post office and other facilities to complete the parliamentary enclave.
