The much talked about nonfunctional street lighting system in the upper east regional capital ,Bolgatanga will be awarded on contract and work is expected to start soon. This was made known by the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Tangoba Abayage.

The poor visibility in Bolgatanga due to the inadequate street lighting system has been a major concern raised by residents for some years now.

The situation has contributed to cases of robbery and accidents in the regional capital and other security related issues. Several campaigns have been launched by groups and individuals for the streets to be lit to no avail.

But responding to a question on progress of plans on the street lighting system during a Press soiree , Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Tangoba Abayage  said all necessary procedures have been followed and the contract will soon be awarded.

Procurement process has been completed and it is to be awarded on contract for the entire streetlight to be worked on completely…in fact, I was insisting we should get same galvanized poles that Bongo has but the Ministry tells us that if we want to wait for the galvanized poles, we will have to wait for another year because they do not have that in stock and since we cant wait for that, we can just make do with the aluminum  poles but I can assure that sooner than later , a Contractor is going to come on site to fix all the streetlights in Bolgatanga”  she explained

Touching on the dysfunctional traffic lighting system in the region, Hon. Tangoba indicated that she has had discussions with the Minister for Roads and Highways for the region to have a modern day traffic system hence, she was pushing for that project to be realized. She is therefore appealing to residents to further their  patience for the challenged to be addressed.

Bolgatanga Municipality has about six traffic terminals that have been dysfunctional for the past two years but only one appears to be working. residents have not been happy about the devastating situation and have called on authorities severally to address the deadly situation.
