The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLRD) in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana has commenced a disinfection exercise at 105 markets in the Upper East region.

The exercise is aimed at protecting residents against the threat of the novel coronavirus.

Briefing the press before the start of the exercise in Bolgatanga, Municipal Chief Executive, Joseph Amiyuure Atuura said 6 major markets known as the Ayia market, the Bolga new market, Sumbrungu market, Sherigu market, Akaka market and Yorogo market are earmarked for the exercise.
Regardless, he said some smaller markets in the municipality will be considered for disinfection after the main exercise.

The MCE underscored the need of the exercise is to raid off any insect or material that might be carrying the virus.
Mr. Amiyuure who indicated that the activity which is taking place only in a day in the region shall paved way for traders to occupy the markets by tomorrow.

“Even now, we have told the traders not to enter the markets so we don’t expect anyone in the markets. The exercise is only today and by tomorrow, they can return to the markets. So, they should cooperate with the government to carry out this exercise”, he said.

Planning Officer at the MLGRD and leader for the Upper East region team for the exercise, Jonathan Aboagye said the exercise is inline with President’s directive to disinfect all major markets in the country.
Mr. Aboagye who commended residents of the region of their cooperation admonished Ghanaians to adhere to the directives by health experts to control the spread of the virus.

“That is a reason we have to listen to the president advises that we should stay at where we are rather than moving to other places. Because when we do that, we may spread the virus. When we adhere to the directives and believe in God, pretty soon, this storm will be over”, he admonished.

The exercise is observed by a team of security personnel made up of the police, the military and the fire service.
