The student governing body for Nursing Training Colleges in Ghana , the Ghana Nurses and Midwifery Trainees Association(GNMTA) has raised doubts their allowances will be paid if Former President John Mahama is given the nod again.

The Association asserts that it was the John Mahama led administration that scrapped the allowances so it creates doubts allowances of nursing trainees will continue if power changes hands in favor of the NDC in 2020 general elections.

This reaction was in response to recent comments made by Flag Bearer of the NDC, John Mahama that he will continue the payments of trainees allowance if given the opportunity again in 2020 general elections.

The student allowances were scrapped by the NDC government on grounds that, funds for the payment of allowances will be channeled into putting up infrastructure and opening up the colleges for the intake of more professionals to meet the educational and health deficit in the country. Hence, the quota system into the Nursing training was taken off.

The infrastructure according to the previous administration, was to absorb the trainees upon completion with readily job.

This decision did not go down well with Teachers and Nursing Trainees in Ghana leading to mass demonstrations against the then government which did not yield any results.

The governing NPP therefore promised to restore the allowances when voted into office ,a promised that has since been fulfilled though with some challenges.

But National Secretary of GNMTA, Asaah Lambert has indicated that there were enough grounds to doubt the comments by John Mahama on the payment of allowances.

Mr. Asaah who was speaking on Daybreak Upper East said “When we were crying for our allowances ,The former President told us in the face that it is better to loose  the elections than to pay our allowance . We can never trust the former President’s comment on the allowance”.

He noted that though there were normalcies and timely payment of allowances by the current administration, indications were clear that it will be paid.

Meanwhile, Former TEIN President,Youth Wing of the NDC at the tertiary institution at Bolgantanga Nursing Training College, Samuel Nambe has rather admonished his colleagues to focus on pushing government to pay their outstanding arrears of allowance than speaking on political comments.
