Afrikids Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization which aims at ensuring and building the capacity and resources of local people especially children in Ghana, has donated medical essentials and foodstuffs to 13 districts in four (4) of its operational regions at a cost of GHC1 million.

The initiative is in line with the organization’s response to the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic among children and mothers within its catchment area.

Speaking to A1 NEWS, Country Director of Afrikids Ghana, Nicholas Kumah said, though the Coronavirus pandemic has hit all sectors in the world, his outfit still saw the need to support the less privileged in society.

“The year 2020 started off promisingly in January for all AfriKids projects, with all staff poised and fervently implementing drawn plans. This however was short-lived as Ghana had its fair hit of COVID-19 and subsequent restrictions on movements and social gatherings in March 2020.

AfriKids as an organization immediately had to adapt to the situation by repositioning itself to keep serving its communities, since projects could no longer function in the usual way. A plan, therefore, had to be drawn to support the government’s effort to respond to the needs of communities as far as COVID – 19 were concerned”.

“And as we have been working in 13 districts in the Upper East, Upper West region, Northern and North East Regions, we saw the need to support them that regard. This support, we intend to reach a total of 87,918 direct beneficiaries and 714,566 indirect beneficiaries with the above-mentioned services and tangible items such as veronica buckets and soap to help in hand washing, rice, and oil to support families that are struggling to feed during these extraordinary times”.

Mr. Kumah, however, hoped the support will help bring a positive impact to the beneficiary families.

“It is our hope that the items will go a long way to reduce the spread of the disease and with other efforts, bring it to a halt. We are grateful for the opportunity to be working in this and other regions, and also to be able to support in this regard”.

The donated items include 570 of veronica buckets, 5,656 of hand sanitizers, 15,658 of face masks, 2000 bags of 5kg rice, and 2000(1 litter) gallons of cooking oil and other medical essentials.

Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage who received the gesture on behalf of the beneficiary districts, commended the organization and encouraged the public to take the safety practices of COVID-19 seriously to reduce its spread.
