Leadership of the People’s National Convention (PNC) in the Upper East Region have expressed shock over the decision of the party’s 2016 Parliamentary Candidate (PC) for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Thomas Akurugu, to defect to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking to A1 Radio, the Upper East Regional Secretary of PNC, Thomas Atamolga Nsoh, said the regional office of the party was not aware of the former PC’s decision to decamp.

With this year’s general election just about 34 days away, Mr. Atamolga noted in a rather sad tone that the development had caused the party more harm than good.

“We, at the regional level have not received any formal notice from him {Thomas Akurugu} but I must emphasize that his decision to cross carpet has caused us and the party a lot.”

Despite wishing the former PC well, Mr. Atamolga indicated that the PNC in the region was still on course and will fight for victory; come December 7.

But responding to the comments of the party’s regional secretary, Mr. Akurugu, who is now a full member of the NDC, pointed out that he had made all the necessary amendments regarding his exit at the national level of the party; and was therefore surprised to hear the comments from Mr. Atamolga, the PNC Regional Secretary.

Mr. Akurugu however wished his former party the PNC well; with a call to the general public particularly those who are still with the PNC to join him wrestle power for the NDC party in the upcoming polls.

Mr. Thomas Akurugu was the 2016 Parliamentary Candidate of the People’s National Convention for Bolgatanga Central Constituency.

A ceremony was held last weekend to officially announce his defection. But According to Mr. Akurugu, he had been a card bearing member of the NDC since 2017.

He polled 7, 431 votes in the 2016 Parliamentary Election on the ticket of the People’s National Convention.
