The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has embarked on a move to link its 16 year old NHIS Card to the National Identification Card; otherwise known as the Ghana Card.

The initiative according to the authority seeks to reduce the burden of persons holding multiple cards as well as ensure that subscribers receive comprehensive healthcare in line with the Primary Health Care Values.

Speaking to A1 News on the sidelines of the annual NHIS Week Celebration held in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Acting Upper East Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority, Kasimu Abdulai, said the policy directive which has already taken effect will help improve technological advances.

Giving details on the integration process, He said “Our outfit was part of the committee that came out with the Ghana Card. So, this initiative started on Monday 9 November 2020, and for a person to get his/her Ghana Card linked to the NHIS Card, have to dial *929# and follow the options. The purpose seeks to improve and promote public healthcare to all citizens in Ghana. And I must add that the procedure is free of charge.”

Mr. Abdulai noted the policy directive also seeks to improve the domestic revenue mobilization.

“…we are also looking at how we can easily keep track of our domestic revenue mobilization.”

Touching on the importance of observing the annual week celebration, Mr. Abdulai explained that the weeklong celebration would be used to educate the general public on the benefits of having the NHIS card and how they could get registered as his outfit targets 179,000 more active members in the Upper East Region by at end of November 2020.
