Just like it took place in other parts of the country, supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region are expected to hit the streets of Bolgatanga today Wednesday, December 23, in protest of the outcome of this year’s election.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Communication Team Member of the NDC in the Upper East Region, John Paul Danka, has stated that although crucial, the demonstration is going to be conducted in a peaceful manner.
He said “Even placards to use are not going to be left in the hands of people to do whatever they want to do. They have been coordinated and written appropriately. Nothing untoward is going to happen. People should feel free.”
He emphasized that the demonstration is essentially meant to protest the election results as declared by the Electoral Commission.
On his part, the Upper East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sanusi Issah, denied claims suggesting that members of his party were planning to infiltrate the demonstration exercise of the opposition party; saying “The NDC is running away from its own shadow.
“We are calm; we want to respect the rule of law. We recognize that demonstrations are part of our democratic culture.” He stated.
Mr. Issah, however expressed worry over what he said were acts of violence that have characterized the ongoing protests by the NDC across the country; citing the burning of lorry tyres on the streets.
He went on to called on the police in the region to maintain professionalism in guiding the protesters in their exercise.
On a lighter note, the NPP Regional Secretary said the street protest by the NDC is nothing but a move to exercise their bodies.
