The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Sore, has appealed for more sponsorship for the 5th Regional GJA Awards, explaining that support received for the event also helps finance training and other activities of the association throughout the year.
The awards, scheduled for October 2, 2026, will be held under the theme, “Beyond the Headlines: The Media’s Role in Promoting WASH for Safe Motherhood and Quality Healthcare.”
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr Sore commended organisations and individuals that have already supported the awards and encouraged other businesses, institutions and individuals to come on board.
“If you can support, we can have discussions and then take it on board. But I’ve always been saying that when we take sponsorship for the awards programme, we don’t use all the resources necessarily for the awards,” he said.
He explained that where sponsorship exceeds the cost of organising the ceremony, the remaining resources are channelled into other activities of the regional GJA, including capacity building for journalists.
“So if we finish, if at the end of the day we have 200,000 coming in and we use 150 or 120 for the awards event, there are other activities. I’ve been talking about training our members, for instance,” he said.
Mr Sore said relying on separate fundraising exercises whenever the association wants to undertake an activity is not sustainable.
“It doesn’t make sense for you to be raising funds every time you have an activity that you want to do. So for people who sponsor us, they don’t only sponsor the awards event, they sponsor the entire regional branch activities of the GJA for the entire year sometimes. And so we encourage more people to come,” he added.
He stressed that while sponsorship is particularly needed ahead of the October 2 awards, individuals and organisations interested in supporting journalism in the Upper East Region can contribute even after the event.
The 5th Upper East Regional GJA Awards are headlined by MyTurn Limited and Lesken Enterprise Limited, with Kacstones Records and the Paga Youth Movement as main sponsors.
