A Member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) in the Upper East Region, Richard Adongo, has advised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not to appoint Members of Parliament (MPs) as Regional Ministers in his next administration.

“One of the things the president should avoid in his next tenure of office is MPs being Regional Ministers.” He said.

According to him, the appointment of MPs as Regional Ministers in most cases has the propensity to affect the work of the MPs in parliament.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East Program, Mr. Adongo noted that the regional ministerial position is one that requires the appointees to as much as possible dwell in the region; a situation he said keeps them from actively participating in parliamentary business.

“They need to be in-touch with the people; they need to live in the region to be able to administer the region. But if you take MPs and make them regional ministers, what time will they get to be in parliament? At the end of the day, one of the institutions suffers. Either the region suffers or parliament suffers.”

Juxtaposing the office of the regional minister and that of other ministers of state, Mr. Adongo said “There’re deputies, chief directors and several other line managers in the ministry who can do what the minister does, so usually its much better there than the case of the regional minister.”
