The Upper East Regional Focal Person of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Reverend John Akaribo, has said government’s flagship programme, ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ was designed to alleviate the plight of farmers, however, peasant farmers in the region have not benefitted enough from it.

According to Rev. Akaribo the initiative which offered little resources to farmers was not sufficient for them to produce enough food for the country.

President Akufo-Addo, in his last State of the Nation Address stated that the country has produced enough food for domestic consumption and for export due to the introduction of the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ program.

But speaking on A1 Radio, Rev. Akaribo said despite the huge investments government has made in the agricultural sector, President Akufo-Addo’s claim over abundance of food in the country contradicts the reality on the ground.

According to him, food produce may be available but the increasingly high cost of accessing it creates a worrying situation.

He further called on the government to put in place proper implementation policies to ensure the that social interventions such as the “Planting for Food and Jobs” as well as the ‘One Village One Dam’ bring full benefits to the intended beneficiaries.
