The Chief Executive Officer of Akuafo Nketewa Company Limited, Dr. Charles Nyaaba, has called on the government to outline initiatives for farmers ahead of the rainy season.
Speaking to A1 Radio on behalf of the farmers, Dr. Nyaaba expressed concerns that despite the government’s rhetoric about supporting farmers, tangible actions have been lacking.
Dr. Nyaaba emphasized the need for a clear subsidy policy, particularly on fertilizers. “We want to hear from the government that this year, we will be given a subsidy on fertilizer. We want to know whether that subsidy is going to be 50 percent, 40 percent, 60 percent—and when that will happen.” He stressed that delayed implementation would render the subsidy ineffective.
The CEO also criticized the launch of the Farmer Service Center without a clear policy framework. “If we don’t have a policy and yet went ahead to launch a project, we see that as political talk.” Dr. Nyaaba urged the government to develop and implement a policy that outlines specific objectives, budget allocations, and implementation strategies.
He further emphasized the importance of stakeholders monitoring the government’s actions and holding it accountable for fulfilling its promises. “We continue to monitor to see what is in the policy, whether it will be implemented or not. If it’s not implemented, what steps can we take as stakeholders to put pressure on the government to perform its function?”
The peasant farmers’ call to action highlights the need for the government to prioritize support for farmers ahead of the rainy season.
