Don’t see lock down as a measure of combating covid-19 – Economist tells Gov’t

A Development Economist and Lecturer at the University for Development Studies, Michael Adongo, has called on the government to devise other means of combating the spread of the coronavirus as he believes imposing another lock down will add Ghana to the heavily indebted countries.

According to him the outbreak of the Coronavirus has brought about an untold impact on the economy; and it could further worsen if government considers another lock down.

It could be recalled that the Information Minister-designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during a press briefing on Monday said the country may be heading for tighter restrictions and a possible lock down should the Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

But Mr. Adongo who spoke on A1 Radio said another lock down will be an unwise decision as it will have untold economic implications on the already weak economy.

“I will advise that government should not be thinking of lock down because it will further worsen the economy. The wake of the virus has brought serious damage to the economy and even the partial lock down which has some months ago did not help the economy. So talking of lock down will be a wise decision.”

Touching on steps that will help in combating the virus rather than the lock down, the development economist suggested that government should rather put strict measures that will limit the movement of people, especially at funerals.

He said, “Strick measures should be implemented to limit the number of people that go to funerals as well as social gatherings.”
