The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the party is not interested in winning a flawed election.
Speaking as a witness for the petitioner, John Mahama, in the ongoing election petition hearing at the Supreme Court, he said the Electoral Commission admitted that the polls were flawed.
The chief scribe of the opposition party said, “that’s why they [EC] kept changing the figures.”
The man popularly known as General Mosquito stated that just as the petitioner stated, the party will prefer that a credible election is held.
“My lord we are not interested in winning or losing a flawed election, we want to be winners of an election that is credible,” he told the court.
When shown videos of him addressing the party’s flagbearer as President Mr. Asiedu Nketia stated that he has not gone on record to say John Mahama won the 2020 general elections.
“I stand by every word, punctuation, and sentence that relates to me, Aseidu Nketia. There is nowhere I indicated definitively that the petitioner has won the election.”
“What I said was that we have won the majority of seats in parliament and that we are cruising for victory and that is precisely what has shown out in all the various speeches.”
Mr. Aseidu Nketia stated that prior to the EC Chair’s declaration all their evidence showed that Mr. Mahama was going to win the election.
“In all elections held before this one, the candidate which wins and controls parliament ends up winning the elections,” he added.
His statements come after he was asked by the lawyer of the first respondent, the EC, to tell the court who in the NDC’s view won the election.
However, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said he failed to bring the figures the party collated during the election process.
Speaking to the press, the spokesperson of the petitioner’s legal team said the petition is questioning the EC’s results thus there was no need to bring in their numbers in court.
“They themselves have different contradicting figures, why do you need another one from us? And that is the point we are making, that the EC themselves what are their figures?” Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong asked.
