I starved myself and rather invested in a police station for Pelungu

Member of Parliament for the Nabdam Constituency in the Upper East Region, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane has lamented over the recent robbery incident which took the life of a young man in the area.

The young man who was identified as Dominic Maaya, and works at the district assembly as Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organization, was shot and killed by masked arm men in the Pelungu market on Saturday evening.

Reacting to the sad incident on A1 Radio, the MP said the incident would not have happened if the police post there was in operation.

According to him, he had “starved” himself for more than a year to raise Ghc 300,000.00 from his Common Fund to put up a police post, but he has been prevented by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) gurus in the district to commission it.

He said he has tried several times to commission the project but he always gets blocked by NPP party gurus in the area.

Narrating the genesis of the police post, the MP said in 2018 there was a similar incident where 2 persons were shot and killed by masked arm men and there were calls for a police post.

“So as a child of the area, I thought it wise to put up a police post at Pelungu near the market. So the project was awarded in 6 months with funding from my Common Fund. So I had a contractor who agreed to finish the project before the 2020 elections. And the reason was that during elections, issues of misunderstanding usually crop from there. So, I wanted to hand over the structure to the security personnel before the election.

But I was prevented from commissioning the project by some NPP members in the district. And their reasons were that I did not use my money to build the structure, their government is in power hence they should commission it.

When I went to the assembly for clarifications, the assembly also gave me one reason that, since I have not finished paying the contractor, there was no way I could hand over the completed project. These have been the excuses from the assembly and the NPP people here.”

Sending his condolences to the deceased family, Dr. Nawaane has assured constituents of putting pragmatic measures in place to help end robbery incidents in the area.
