Despite the numerous challenges the Gbeogo School for the Deaf is engulfed with, management is calling on the government and other stakeholders in education to urgently help the school to set up a sickbay with a resident nurse.

Speaking on Reporters Visit on A1 Radio on Friday, March 26, the headmaster of the school, Felix Neetege noted that management and pupils required the service of a resident nurse because often than not, they struggle at night in terms of responding to the medical needs of the pupils.

“… yes, we don’t have it all in terms of infrastructure, but a resident nurse to the school is what we need most. The thing is that taking care of these children and their health involves a lot.  At night sometimes we struggle a lot before taking a pupil to the hospital if there is any problem. So, a resident nurse will do us good. We have a total of over 320 students and as a boarding school it is very important to have a resident nurse.” Mr. Neetege said.

Touching on some other challenges confronting the teachers and pupils, Mr. Neetege said the absence of electricity connectivity to the vocational block poses a big challenge in the vocational training of the children.

“As a young special school for the Deaf, lack of lighting system to some key areas such as toilet facilities, walkways, vocational block worries us to the extreme. Also, inadequate dining hall tables and benches challenge us the more.” He said.

Even though the Gbeogo School for the Deaf in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region has gained regional recognition, the school continues to struggle in diverse ways to extend that pupils have to resort to open defecation at night due to poor lighting system on campus.

The headmaster has however called on government as well as other stakeholders in education and health to come to the aid of the school to improve the quality of life of the pupils.
