The Bolgatanga Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Richard Anaba Salifu says the people in the Bolgatanga Municipality did not receive him as he expected when he was posted to head the police in the municipality.

According to him, his intention was to integrate and work collectively with the people in the municipality when he was posted, but his first week in the office, he was met with protests and insults by market women.

The incident the commander said was a signal to him that the people did not receive him well and ever since he has been trying his best to collaborate with indigenes to curb crime within the municipality.

It could be recalled that some time ago, Chief Superintendent Richard Anaba Salifu once admitted to ordering his officers to whip some market women who took to the street to demonstrate against the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly’s decision to move them from the Bolgatanga market to a new market.

The Assembly’s decision was to ensure adherence to social distancing protocols in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, but the traders however kicked against the relocation citing lack of adequate space at the new market.

Speaking on Zina Yela on A1 Radio, Chief Superintendent Anaba noted that the incident really brought him sleepless nights as he never thought that his own people will go to such extreme.

“That day, I did not want to speak English or any other language but Guruni yet they did not obey me. To extend that some of them were throwing stones at my men, so I order them to whip them. I did that to let them know that I was their son, or father and their behavior that day was not the best. It was all about their own safety, the virus is real. But I must say that since that day, I always feel like my own people have not received me well.”

The incident Chief Superintendent Anaba noted was only acted to prevent others from causing harm to their colleagues.

He however apologized to those who were once offended by his actions that day and called on them to support him put to an end the criminal activities within the municipality.
