President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Naba Sigri Bewong has confirmed that the growing trend of unwanted pregnancies in the region can be attributed to the heavy dowry price men has to pay before getting married to their prospective wives. Speaking on A1 radio’s Personality Profile Program on Wednesday, Naba Sigri Bewong lamented saying it has come to their notice at the house of chiefs that young men in the region refuses to marry even when their spouses to be becomes pregnant due to the heavy dowry price which most prospective husbands can’t afford.
Naba Sigri Bewong who is also the paramount of the Sekote Traditional Area on the program assured the general public that chiefs in the region are in dialogue with elders of the region to reduce the heavy dowry price.
Four or five cows are required to be paid as traditional bride price in most parts of the Upper East Region. This has attributed to most females in the region especially in the Gurune speaking area giving birth in their father’s home without marrying.
However Naba Sigri Bewong advised parents not to put asunder in their children’s love relationship because of the dowry price since that might cause a break in their children’s love relationship.
