
The Upper East Regional Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed misgivings about media reports on the Election 2012 in the region and appealed to journalists to always seek election information from the Commission. It said the District Assembly Elections was scheduled for March 3 and appealed to the media to support by intensifying electoral education to help increase voter turnout.
During the capacity building training workshop for media personnel on election reportage, Samuel Akapule Chief Reporter with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), outlined the media contribution towards the success of elections. According to him among some of the key roles of the media during election is to provide an enabling environment for full public participation in elections by educating voters on how to exercise their democratic rights. Mr. Akapule pointed out that a prime concern of the media is to cover elections and in order to provide the right and accurate information to the public.
Deputy Upper East Regional Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Amadu Sulley addressing journalists at a workshop regretted that some media organizations nearly created chaos by their ill-informed comments about the electoral processes in Election 2012. The workshop themed ‘improving the quality of information in the electoral process’ was supported the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Mr. Amadu however commended some media organizations and individual for their satisfactory role in the 2012 general election. Mr. Arthur Yeboah James Upper East Regional Director of EC said conducting the district assembly elections was a collective and shared responsibility and appealed to the general public to participate.
