Fulani ethnic group in Ghana is demanding that the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) captures them by name in the ongoing 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).

According to the Fulani ethnic group, they find it discriminatory to be classified under ‘all other tribes’ and want that to change immediately before the start of the exercise.

The Fulanis added that, they have been in the country for more than 4 hundred years and exists in all 16 regions of the country and as such, it is not appropriate to classify them under ‘all other ethnic groups.’

The Fulanis, who raised the concern during a press conference in Accra stated that they deserve to be respected and counted by name like any other ethnic group in Ghana.

Mohammed Ibrahim Bari Diallo, Founder of Arise for Rights of Fulanis in Ghana (AFROFIG), a Non-Governmental Organization, working to protect the rights of Fulanis in Ghana said the 1992 constitution of Ghana recognizes a person as a citizen of Ghana by birth and most of their people were born in Ghana and are Ghanaian citizens so they can not be classified under ‘all other ethnic groups.’

Mr. Mohammed who was speaking in an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio said, it was important that the GSS gives equal recognition to all ethnic groups in the country without any form of discrimination in an important national exercise like the 2021 PHC.
