The President, Nana Akufo Addo is in the Upper West Region for a 2-day tour. As part of the visit, the President is supposed to apprise himself of all ongoing government projects in the region, interact with the chiefs and people of the area and gather feedback on the implementation of flagship government programmes.

The visit was also to collect first-hand information about the military brutality and the response from government and the Military High Command.

“Since the incident happened her in Wa involving the soldiers, I have not had an opportunity to come here, so I thought that I should come and add my voice to that of the Minister of Defence and apologize to the people of the area. I am happy to see that the traditional authorities and opinion leaders are satisfied about government’s response to the incident,” he explained.

The President first’s point of call was to GBC’s Radio Upper West. The President then paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, Naa Seidu Fuseini Pelpuo.

At the Chief’s Palace, the President, Nana Akufo Addo responded to some of the requests from the chief.

The president also expressed worry over the continuous smuggle of fertilizers to neighbouring countries saying “I want to make an appeal to you [Wa Naa] and the elders of the area to assist the police and security forces clamp down on the smuggling of fertilizers outside our country. It is not right that inputs for our agriculture which have been financed by the Ghanaian taxpayer should find their way into other countries largely because of the greed of a few criminal elements in our society”.

The Spokesperson and Secretary to the Wa Naa, Naa Ibrahim Kadri stressed that the region sought corrective measures against the military and not vengeance.

He explained that this is because of the tremendous work the military has done in finding and destroying camps of terrorists hiding in the region and also assisting the police to clamp down on armed robbery.

The Wa Naa through his Spokesperson and Secretary, Naa Kadri appealed for the President’s assistance to address the issue of fertilizer shortage in the region.

He also requested for support for a new school which has been established at the Wa Naa’s Palace to help bring education to people closer to the area.

The President, Nana Akufo Addo then left for Tumu to interact with the chiefs and people of the area.

The President is expected to spend the second day of his tour at Lambussie and Nandom where he will inspect ongoing projects and meet the Acting President of the Nandom Traditional Council.
